VA Combined Disability Rating Calculator — 2026
Step 1 — Enter each service-connected condition. Add the condition name, diagnostic code (optional), select the rating percentage (including 0%), and check Bilateral for conditions affecting both limbs. Start with your highest rating.
Condition #1 — Highest Rating
⚖️ Bilateral factor will be applied to this condition. The VA adds a 10% bonus to the combined bilateral rating group before inserting it into the whole-person formula per 38 CFR §4.68.
Condition #2
⚖️ Bilateral factor will be applied to this condition. The VA adds a 10% bonus to the combined bilateral rating group before inserting it into the whole-person formula per 38 CFR §4.68.
Step 2 — Dependent Status. The VA pays more when you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents. Dependent pay only applies at 30%+ combined rating. Every qualifying dependent increases your monthly compensation.
Permanently helpless children qualify regardless of age.
💡 Key Thresholds: At 50%+, free VA healthcare. At 100% P&T, dependents get CHAMPVA healthcare and children qualify for the DEA / Fry Scholarship for free college. Dependent pay only activates at 30% or higher combined rating.
Step 3 — Special Circumstances. Select all that apply. These can significantly increase your monthly compensation beyond your base rating.
💼 Individual Unemployability (IU / TDIU)
I cannot work due to my service-connected disabilities
IU pays you at the 100% rate ($3,938.58/mo) even if your combined rating is lower. Generally requires: single disability at 60%+ OR combined 70%+ with one at 40%+.

🤝 Aid & Attendance (A&A)
I require another person's help for daily activities
For veterans who need assistance with bathing, dressing, feeding, medication, or who are bedridden or in a nursing home. Significantly boosts monthly pay.

🔢 Why 0% Ratings Matter
A 0% rating officially establishes service connection. When your condition worsens, the VA doesn't question whether it's service-related — they just rate the severity. Veterans with 0% ratings win increases far more easily than those filing fresh claims.
⚖️ The Bilateral Factor Explained
If you have disabilities in both arms, legs, or paired limbs, the VA combines those ratings first, adds a 10% bonus to that subtotal, then combines the result with your other ratings. Most calculators skip this — this one does it correctly per 38 CFR §4.68.
💊 SMC Can Triple Your Pay
Special Monthly Compensation ranges from $130/month additional (SMC-K) to over $10,000/month (SMC-R2/T). Veterans with severe disabilities, loss of limbs, blindness, or need for daily care should always explore SMC levels with a VSO.
📋 Diagnostic Codes Matter
Every VA-rated condition has a diagnostic code from 38 CFR Part 4. These codes define the rating criteria for each condition. Knowing your DC helps you understand exactly what evidence you need to increase your rating at your next C&P exam.

Everything veterans need to know about VA disability ratings, bilateral factor, SMC and more.
How does the VA calculate combined disability ratings? ▼
The VA uses the "whole person" method — not simple addition. Each rating is applied to your remaining able-bodied percentage. For example: a 70% rating leaves 30% remaining. A second 30% rating is applied to that 30%, adding 9% more disability. Combined: 79%, rounded to 80%. That's why 70% + 30% ≠ 100%.
What is the VA bilateral factor and how does it work? ▼
Per 38 CFR §4.68, when a veteran has service-connected disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, the VA adds a 10% bonus to the combined value of those bilateral ratings before plugging them into the whole-person formula. Example: Left knee 20% + Right knee 20% = combined 36%, then ×1.10 = 39.6% bilateral group, which then combines with other ratings.
What does a 0% VA disability rating mean and is it worth having? ▼
A 0% rating means the VA officially recognized your condition as service-connected, but it's not currently severe enough for compensation. It IS worth having — it establishes service connection permanently, making future rating increases much easier. When your condition worsens, you file for an increase (not a new claim). Veterans with 0% ratings win increases far more often than those without any established connection.
How do I qualify for Individual Unemployability (IU / TDIU)? ▼
IU (also called TDIU — Total Disability Individual Unemployability) pays you at the 100% rate even if your combined rating is lower. To qualify, your service-connected disabilities must prevent substantially gainful employment AND you need: a single disability rated at 60%+ OR a combined rating of 70%+ with at least one disability rated at 40%+. File VA Form 21-8940 through an accredited VSO.
What is Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) and who qualifies? ▼
SMC is additional tax-free monthly compensation for veterans with severe disabilities beyond the standard rating schedule. It ranges from SMC-K (+$130.94/mo for loss of creative organ or specific anatomical losses) all the way to SMC-R2/T (~$10,257/mo for veterans requiring the highest level of daily care). Many veterans who qualify for SMC don't know it — always consult an accredited VSO to review your eligibility.
What are VA diagnostic codes and why do they matter? ▼
VA Diagnostic Codes (DC) are 4-digit numbers from 38 CFR Part 4 that correspond to specific medical conditions. Each code has a rating schedule defining what symptoms correspond to 0%, 10%, 20% etc. Knowing your DC lets you understand exactly what evidence and symptoms are needed to achieve a higher rating — and helps you prepare for Compensation & Pension (C&P) exams more effectively.
What benefits come with a 100% P&T VA rating? ▼
Permanent & Total (P&T) designation at 100% unlocks: completely free VA healthcare and prescriptions, CHAMPVA healthcare coverage for your spouse and dependents, DEA or Fry Scholarship free college for children, property tax exemptions in most states (some fully exempt), no future re-examination (rating is permanent), commissary and exchange access, and Chapter 35 vocational rehabilitation for dependents.
